AP80663 Plasma Physics
Semester 6

 Brief description of aims and content

The aims of the course are to illustrate plasma physics concepts and develop a physical
understanding of characteristic properties of plasmas as one of the states of matter in universe.
The course covers the essentials of plasma physics, including the nature of a plasma, motion of single charged particles in electric and magnetic fields, the fluid models of plasmas, magneto
hydrodynamics, waves in plasma, and instabilities.

         Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed the module, students should be able to
demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • Fundamental characteristics of plasmas;
  • Charged particle motion in electric and magnetic fields;
  • Plasma fluid theories;
  • Plasma waves and instabilities.

Learning resources

  1. F. F. Chen, Introduction to Plasma Physic and Controlled Fusion.
  2. W. Baumjohann and R. A. Treumann, Basic Space Plasma Physics.
  3. J. A. Bittencourt Fundamentals of Plasma Physics (Electronic book).
